Raspberry Joan J has won the RHS Award for Garden Merit and it easy to see why. With spine free canes you can pick your bright berries without getting caught on annoying spines and it has an upright growing habit so you can grow in pots and containers if you do not have much garden space.
This year why not have a go at growing raspberry Joan J. This primocane variety produces huge, juicy fruits that have a great flavour. They also produce a very high yield, meaning you will have lots of raspberries for desserts, jams or just to chill and add to your favourite drink.
When grown in the garden, cropping is from mid August through to mid September and as it is a Primocane variety, you will be picking your first crop in its first year.
Primocane (autumn-fruiting) varieties fruit on canes produced in the current year. After cropping, these should be cut down to ground level to promote the growth of new canes.
This high yielding, large fruited raspberry will grow up to 2m (79in) and needs little support but will reward you with a seven week cropping season. When planting your raspberries, make sure they are in fertile, well- drained soil and are positioned in full sunshine for the highest quality of raspberry.
